Outside, the finish decides how long it lasts

Indoors you buy the shape. Outdoors the shape is the least of it. Two lanterns can look identical on a shelf and be five years apart in service life, and the difference is a coating you cannot see in a photograph.

The failure is always the same. Bare mild steel on an exposed balcony rusts at the welded seam first, because that is where the mill scale broke and where water sits after rain. One winter of freeze, thaw and salt air and the seam weeps orange down the wall behind it. Painted steel goes the same way a season later, starting at the first chip.

So read the description for the coating, not the color. Powder coated means baked polyester over prepared steel, which survives chips better than wet paint. Galvanized means a zinc layer that corrodes instead of the steel under it. Stainless is not one thing: 304 handles coastal air, 430 spots within a year near the sea. Anything described only as metal is painted mild steel.

Watering pots outdoors is a volume problem

A pot outdoors in July is a different object from the same pot indoors. Sun on the sides, wind across the surface and a plant in full growth can empty a 12 inch (30 cm) container in one hot day, and most container plants lost in August are lost to a schedule built in May.

Water until 10 to 20 percent of what you poured comes out of the drainage hole. That runoff proves the whole root ball is wet and flushes the fertilizer salts that build up in the top inch. A splash that darkens the surface wets two inches and leaves the roots below dry, which is how a plant dies of thirst in soil that looks watered.

Check with a finger rather than a calendar. Push two inches into the soil at the edge of the pot: dry at that depth means water now, damp means wait. Early morning is the right time, because the plant drinks before the heat and the foliage dries before dark.

Then size the can to your arm. Water weighs 8.3 lb per gallon, so a 2 gallon can is 17 lb carried at arm's length, which is why the big one bought in spring sits in the shed by July. A spout that rises to a mouth at or above the fill line empties fully without tipping past vertical, and a removable rose turns the stream into rain for seedlings.

Solar lights and the six hours nobody checks

A solar light is a battery with a very slow charger attached. It needs 6 to 8 hours of direct sun on the panel to fill that battery, and direct means unshaded: a panel under a tree, against a north wall or behind a railing gets a fraction of the charge and runs for an hour after dusk rather than all night.

Set expectations by lumens. A path marker puts out 5 to 30 lumens, enough to show where the edge of the path is and not enough to walk by. A wall light with a bigger panel reaches 100 to 200. Anything claiming far more from a panel the size of a phone is quoting the LED, not what the battery sustains.

The part that fails is the battery, not the panel. Most units run a single AA or AAA nickel metal hydride cell that loses capacity after 12 to 24 months and costs a dollar to replace, so check whether the housing opens before you throw one out. Clean the panel twice a year too, since a film of pollen cuts the charge more than a cloudy week does.

Garden ornaments, and where they actually go

An ornament dropped in the middle of a lawn reads as an object left behind. The same piece at the base of a shrub, half in shadow, reads as something you came across. Place them where a plant meets a hard edge, against foliage rather than sky, and low enough that you find them by walking.

Sectional pieces need this most, since the effect depends on the ground looking undisturbed between the parts. Sit them on gravel or bark rather than soil, which keeps the base out of standing water and stops it sinking half an inch every wet season.

For resin, the sun does the damage. Painted polyresin fades on the lit side within two or three summers and yellows under the paint, so anything you care about wants dappled shade. Concrete lasts far longer and costs you the ability to move it: a 24 inch concrete figure runs 80 to 120 lb, so you place it once.

Cleaning stone, concrete and resin without wrecking them

Green film is algae, black spotting is usually mold, and white bloom on concrete is efflorescence, mineral salt migrating out of the piece as it dries. One of the three needs no treatment: efflorescence brushes off dry and returns until the concrete has finished curing.

For algae and mold, start with warm water, a few drops of dish soap and a soft nylon brush, worked from the bottom up so dirty water does not streak the dry surface below. Oxygen bleach in warm water handles what the brush leaves and spares nearby planting. Chlorine bleach at one part in ten is faster and burns foliage it drips onto, so soak the ground first.

Two things to avoid. Vinegar is acidic and etches limestone, marble and the cement in cast stone, however often it gets suggested. And a pressure washer strips the surface off cast stone and drives water deep into concrete, where it freezes in November and cracks the piece.

Frost is a water problem, not a cold problem

Pots do not crack because it got cold. They crack because water soaked into the clay expanded by 9 percent when it froze and the pot was in the way. An empty terracotta pot left out through a wet winter splits; the same pot stored dry under a bench does not.

So winter preparation is drainage work. Raise every pot onto feet or bricks so the drainage hole cannot sit in a puddle and freeze shut. Empty and turn over anything that holds water, saucers and bird baths included, and drain a fountain pump rather than leaving it submerged. Frost proof on a label means the fired body tolerates freezing, not that the pot can sit in ice.

In a container the roots are the vulnerable part, surrounded by cold air rather than insulated by ground. Group pots against a wall so they shelter each other, wrap the sides with burlap while leaving the top open to rain, and cover foliage with fabric rather than plastic, which freezes leaves where it touches them.

A balcony is the hardest place you can put anything

Everything above gets worse four floors up. Wind is faster and more turbulent at the corner of a building, which flattens tall plants and takes light aluminum furniture over the rail. Sun bounces off glass onto the wall, so a west facing balcony runs hotter than a garden bed and pots dry twice as fast.

Weight is the constraint people discover last. Wet soil runs about 100 lb per cubic foot, so a 20 inch planter fully watered can pass 150 lb. Keep the heaviest containers at the edges above the supporting wall rather than in the middle of the span, and buy for the finish: galvanized or powder coated rather than painted, wide at the foot so wind cannot use the plant as a sail.

Out here, everything is either holding water or shedding it

The category sorts into two piles. Some pieces are meant to hold water and give it up completely before the first freeze: cans, bowls, saucers, fountains. The rest are meant to shed it, letting rain run off and dry before it can sit anywhere: ornaments, stands, lanterns, furniture.

Almost every outdoor failure is an object doing the wrong one of those two: water sitting in a seam it should have run out of, or leaving a pot that was supposed to keep it. Two questions cover the whole purchase. Where does the water go, and what happens when it freezes there?

What are the common mistakes in choosing plant pots?

Buying too small, buying without a drainage hole, and buying a finish that will not survive where the pot stands. A pot two sizes larger than the root ball keeps soil wet for a week, and one with no hole leaves no way to flush salts out. Outdoors, add a fourth: buying too light, since a tall plant in a plastic pot is a sail.

What is the best type of planter for outdoors?

Fiberglass or concrete for anything large and permanent, glazed frost proof ceramic for anything you want to look at. Fiberglass gives the look of stone at a fraction of the load, which matters on a deck, and it does not crack in a freeze. Concrete outlasts everything and cannot be moved once planted. Avoid unglazed terracotta where it freezes hard, since the porous clay soaks up water and splits.

How often should you water outdoor potted plants?
