A wind spinner needs open air on every side and a breeze that actually moves. This one is a metal garden stake with a witch riding a broom at the top and two stacked rings below it, cut with bats and stars, that turn against each other whenever the wind comes through.

Care

Rinse the grit off the rings after a dusty stretch and let them dry. A drop of light oil at the collar where each ring rides on the pole quiets the squeak that turns up after a wet month, and lifting the whole thing out before winter buys you several more seasons of turning.

Good to know

Two rings that turn need clearance all the way around. Set against a fence or under a low branch they catch and stop, and a spinner that has stopped is a pole. Put it where wind crosses open ground, at the front of a bed rather than behind the hydrangeas.

It is also unmistakably a witch on a broom, which reads as Halloween from March through September. Storage is part of owning it.
