Match the top to the pot, not to the plant. The Small at 5.51 in (14 cm) sits under a 4 in to 6 in nursery pot and the Large at 7.87 in (20 cm) takes an 8 in pot with nothing hanging over the edge. A wider pot will still balance, but it rocks the first time you water it from one side.
Good to know
This lifts a pot, it does not raise a plant. At 3.54 in (9 cm) what you gain is airflow underneath and a dry floor, not height at the window, so a fern you are trying to get up into the light needs a taller stand than this. Wood takes standing water badly too: keep a saucer between the pot and the top, and empty the saucer once the pot has drained.
