Coats end up over the back of a chair because the hook by the door is already carrying two jackets and a tote bag. One peg holds one coat well, so the fix is a row of them at the right heights rather than one hook doing everything.

The short peg reaches out about as far as a thumb, which suits hats, tea towels and a set of keys. The long one at 3.9 in (10 cm) is the one that takes a winter coat without the shoulder sliding straight back off.

Good to know

The mounting angle shifts with the length, so a row that mixes 6 cm and 10 cm pegs will not sit at one uniform angle along the wall. Pick a single length for a matched row, or mix them on purpose and stagger the heights while you are at it.

One peg, one garment. Three coats on a single wooden peg is the standard way to pull a fixing out of drywall, and the peg usually survives the wall.
