This is a field toy, not a lab instrument. Point it at things a child can pick up and carry back: a beetle, a coin, the weave of a T shirt, the edge of a crystal. A drop of pond water on a glass slide belongs to a different machine on a different budget.

The pitch is that it pulls kids away from a tablet, and outdoors it does. Indoors on a wet afternoon it is one more screen in the house, and it gets treated like one.

Care

Blow the dust off the lens before anything touches it, then wipe with a soft dry cloth. Grit wiped across a lens gets ground straight into it. And clip the lanyard on: a yellow magnifier dropped in long grass stays lost until the mower finds it.
