Ceiling projectors live or die on how dark the room gets. With the blinds down this throws a full sky overhead; with a night light on in the hall, it throws a smudge.
It is a projector that takes swappable film discs, each disc a different sky, and spreads it across the ceiling and the walls.

Each film disc is rated for about 90 to 100 hours, so a disc a night lasts a long stretch before you notice it fading. Swapping one takes a few seconds: the disc slides in, the switch does the rest, and a child can manage both.
A textured or popcorn ceiling scatters the stars and blurs their edges, while a flat white ceiling holds them. Treat it as a light to look at rather than a light to read by, and keep a lamp within reach of the bed.
