A mantel holds one large object well and five small ones badly. This is built to be the one: a cloaked rider with no head on a galloping horse, cast in resin with a matte black finish, carrying an orange jack o' lantern where the head should be.

Matte black takes light differently from a glossy piece. It holds the shape of the cloak and the legs of the horse instead of scattering highlights that flatten them out, and the pumpkin is the only color anywhere on it, so the eye goes straight there and stays.

Care

Dust it with a dry brush, particularly under the cloak and between the legs of the horse. Matte black shows dust as a gray film sooner than any other finish, and a cloth cannot get into the gaps that hold most of it.

Good to know

It is a cast piece with thin parts: a raised hoof, the trailing edge of a cloak. Put it back in its own box at the end of the season rather than in a crate with the rest of the decorations, or one of those parts meets a concrete garage floor.

Black and one note of orange carries the subject without shouting it, so it can stay out into November while the rest of the pumpkins go back up the stairs.
