A garden path after dark is lit by whatever spills out of the kitchen window, and that gives up about six feet from the house. These go in the bed alongside it: mushroom caps in cracked glass that take a charge all day and come on by themselves once the light drops.

The panel detaches from the lights, which matters more than it sounds. Most solar garden lights have to live where the sun is, not where you want them. These can sit under a shrub while the panel stays out in the open.

Care

Wipe the panel clean every few weeks. Dust and pollen on a solar panel cut the charge long before the battery gives out, and a dim mushroom is far more often a dirty panel than a dead light.

Good to know

These mark a path, they do not light one. The glow shows where a bed ends in the dark and will not help you find a dropped key, so treat them as edging rather than as the only light near a step.

A short winter day makes a short charge. They run for less of the evening in December than in June, which is true of every solar light in the garden and better known in advance than discovered in the dark.
