Coasters exist to catch a ring before it reaches the table, and most of them do that quietly. This one does not. The shell holds a pressure mechanism, so setting a mug down pushes the turtle's eyes wide and drops its jaw open, and lifting the mug puts the face back to where it started.

Size

At 4 in (10.2 cm) wide, the shell is a little broader than the base of a standard coffee mug. A wide tumbler or a stemmed wine glass with a big foot will overhang, and an overhanging glass is a glass that is only half on the mechanism.

Good to know

Resin absorbs nothing. It catches the drip and holds it on the shell, so wipe it between drinks rather than stacking a second mug on the puddle.
Moving parts and condensation are an awkward pair. Dry the shell after an iced drink instead of letting water sit around the hinge.
No temperature figure backs the heat resistant claim, so treat a mug straight off a stove differently from a mug of coffee.
It is a joke that runs every single time someone puts a cup down. Some households find that charming for longer than others.
