A wood base that lifts off is the difference between washing a vase properly and rinsing around a joint you cannot reach. The glass comes out, goes under the tap, and the wood stays dry. Two pairings: green glass on a dark base, clear glass on a light one, in five heights from 5 in (13 cm) up to 14 in (34 cm).

Height is only half the decision. The L stands 12 in (29 cm) but measures 4 in (10 cm) across, a narrow column for a few tall stems. The M is shorter at 9 in (23 cm) and wider at 5.5 in (14 cm), which is the one that takes a supermarket bunch without the heads splaying.
Care
Lift the glass out and hand wash it. Wipe the wood base with a damp cloth and dry it straight away, because wood left sitting in a ring of spilled water raises the grain and darkens in a patch that never quite matches back.
Good to know
Buying these singly is the right way to do it, but a row of the same height reads as a shop display. Take three sizes that step, XS, M and XL, and put them at different depths on the surface rather than in a line.
