A ceiling fixture lights the middle of a room and leaves the walls flat. A sconce at head height beside a bed or above a bar does the opposite, and that is the job here: a metal pulley wheel on a mounting plate, a cord over the wheel, and an open cage shade hanging below it in a weathered antique finish.

Good to know

The shade is a cage, so the bulb is the thing you actually look at. A clear filament bulb reads as deliberate through open bars; a frosted spiral reads as a fitting somebody gave up on halfway. Pick the bulb before you hang the fixture.

Choose the plug version if you rent or if there is no junction box in the wall you want. It trades a tidy look for a cable you can run behind furniture, and it takes a screwdriver instead of an electrician.

Care

Dust the cage with a dry brush rather than a cloth, which snags on the bars. Leave the finish alone: the weathering is applied, and a metal polish will lift it off in patches.
