A cutting roots when the node stays under water and the leaves stay above it. In a wide jar the stem slides sideways, the leaves end up soaking, and a healthy trim turns to mush on the windowsill inside a week.
These are handmade borosilicate glass, shaped like a pomegranate, in two sizes: 2 x 3 in (5 x 7.5 cm) and 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm).

The small one takes about the space of an espresso cup, the medium about a coffee mug. Neither is a flower vase: one cutting or a few short stems each, and a supermarket bunch tips both over.
Care
Change the water every few days or the roots slime over. Wash by hand in warm water with a bottle brush, because dried algae inside a shaped glass is a job you want to do exactly once.
