Loose leaf tea needs room to open. That is the whole argument for an infuser like this one over a tight little mesh ball: leaves swell to several times their dry size, and the ones packed against a wall never get to.

The mechanism is a stainless steel strainer inside a seated resin monk, and the brewed tea leaves him from the least dignified point available. The joke is doing a lot of work here, but the filter underneath it is a real one.

Good to know

Fill the chamber loosely, about halfway. A packed infuser gives weak tea because the water cannot get through the middle of the pile, which is the opposite of what people expect from cramming more leaves in.

Care

Empty the leaves while they are still warm and rinse the strainer straight away. Tannin dries into a brown film on steel that no amount of hot water shifts later, and resin and a dishwasher cycle are not friends either. Warm water, soft brush, done.
