Drainage decides whether a plant lives in a pot like this, and this one has a hole in the base, which puts it ahead of most decorative planters on a desk. You can fill it with soil and plant straight into it, or drop a nursery pot inside and lift that out at the sink.

Good to know

A hole in the base means water comes out of the base, so put a saucer, a coaster or a tile under it before you water it on a wooden desk. A pot this size also dries out quickly, which a succulent or a small cactus forgives and a fern does not. If the plant idea fades, it still works on a desk holding pens, clips and the small things that otherwise live in a drawer.

Care

Rinse it out between plants and let it dry fully before refilling, since old soil left in a glazed pot carries whatever killed the last occupant. Wipe the glazed face with a damp cloth when watermarks build around the rim.
