The trick is an L shaped bracket. One arm goes under the bottom book, the other hides between its pages, and from the front the stack looks like it is floating with a black metal figure holding it up. Screwed to a wall it works as a floating shelf; stood on a desk it works as a bookend running the same illusion sideways.

The bottom book is a sacrifice. It sits open on the bracket and takes a crease down the spine, so pick a paperback you will not miss rather than the hardback you actually like. On a wall, the fixings want a stud or a real anchor: a stack of books weighs more than the shelf holding it.
Care
Dust the silhouette with a dry cloth and keep it off a wall that gets hard afternoon sun. Black finishes chalk and go gray on the side that faces the glass.
