Rooting a cutting in a jam jar works, and for six weeks there is a jam jar on the counter. These are blown glass bulbs on a natural wood stand: a metal bar runs through holes in the glass and seats in rubber gaskets, so each bulb rotates or lifts off when you want to pour it out.

All three are 3.1 in (7.8 cm) deep, which is the number that matters on a narrow windowsill. The large one runs 8.1 in (20.5 cm) across, about a hand span, so it takes the width of a laptop's edge on a desk.
Care
Empty and rinse the bulbs about once a week. A warm room turns still water green faster than a cutting grows roots, and the film sticks to the inside of the glass once it starts.
Good to know
Full bulbs sit high on a bar and the whole thing is top heavy. Push the stand back from the edge of a desk, especially the one carrying three, and top the water up in place rather than carrying the assembled stand to the sink.
