Loose leaf tea ends up in the cup unless something catches it on the way. This catches it inside a small Yixing clay figure that sits between the pot and the cup: you pour hot water into the open mouth, and filtered tea comes out below.
What the figure does with the water on its way out is the whole joke, and your guests will work it out before you finish pouring.

Good to know
Unglazed clay takes on whatever you pour through it. That is a feature if you drink one kind of tea and a nuisance if you switch between a smoky pu erh and a delicate green, because the first will keep showing up in the second for weeks. Pick a lane, or keep it for the tea you drink most.
Care
Hot water only. Soap soaks straight into unglazed clay and the next pour tastes of dish soap, which rinsing does not fix. Shake it out and let it dry in open air rather than shutting it in a cupboard damp.
