Put a taper in the tall one and the flame lands around seated eye level, which is where a centerpiece starts hiding the person across the table. The short one at 4 in keeps the flame under the conversation. Run both down the middle and you get height without a wall of candles.

Good to know

Wood and an open flame have one rule: never let a taper burn down to the socket. Snuff it while there is still a stub to pull out. Wood scorches, and a scorch ring does not sand out of a turning this small without changing its shape.

Let dripped wax go cold and hard, then lift it off with a fingernail. Warming it drives the wax into the grain and leaves a dark patch that stays there.

Each piece is made by hand, so grain and tone shift from one to the next. Two bought together will not match the way two molded parts match, which is the reason to buy wood and also the thing that surprises people.
