Size

At 7 in (18 cm) tall it sits on a desk without crossing in front of a monitor, and on a console it stays under the eyeline of anything hung on the wall behind. The neck of a bulb is narrow, which is what holds a cutting upright and also what limits the stem you can push through it: pothos, philodendron, tradescantia and coleus all go in easily, a woody stem with a fat node does not.

Good to know

Change the water when it clouds, which is roughly once a week in a warm room. Roots left in stale water go brown and soft, and a cutting rarely comes back from that.

The vessel is plastic. It survives the knock that would end a glass bulb, and it pays for that by scratching: a bottle brush hazes the inside over a season, so rinse it with water and a swirl of uncooked rice instead of scrubbing it.

Hard water leaves a white ring at the fill line, and on a clear wall it shows from across the room. Wipe it off with white vinegar before it sets.
