Size

It stands 9.45 in (24 cm) tall and 6.3 in (16 cm) wide, a little more than the 8.5 in width of a sheet of letter paper, and it weighs 1.1 lb (0.5 kg) empty. That is light for ceramic at this size, so a tall top heavy plant needs the weight of damp soil under it to hold the whole thing down.

Good to know

The base is closed. Water that goes in stays in, and roots standing in it turn brown from the bottom over a few weeks. Two ways around that: keep the plant in its nursery pot and lift it out to water at the sink, or plant it directly and pour small amounts, no more than the soil can drink in a day.

It also works dry. Preserved stems, pampas, a bundle of eucalyptus: no water in the piece, no worry about the finish, and the silhouette carries a console on its own.

Ceramic and a hard floor end the same way every time. Set it back from the edge of the shelf, particularly on the marbled finishes where a chip breaks the pattern rather than hiding in it.
