Paint outdoors is maintenance, not a permanent state. Put it where it gets shade for part of the day, under a tree or against a wall that faces away from the afternoon, and the color holds far longer than it will out in the open. A coat of clear exterior sealer before the first season is worth the hour it takes.
Care
Rinse the dust off with a hose in spring and dry it rather than leaving water sitting in the joints. Touch up chips as soon as you spot them, because bare metal under a painted coat corrodes outward where you cannot see it happening.
