The base blocks sit 2 in (5 cm) wide and 1.5 in (3.8 cm) deep, so the bar stands off the wall by roughly the width of two fingers. That is the clearance a towel needs behind it to dry at all.

Measure the wall first. A bar that lands an inch short of where the fixings need to go is a bar in a drawer. The short one suits a cloakroom or the side of a vanity, and the long one belongs next to a shower where a bath towel actually lives. Bar and base finishes are chosen separately, so a gold bar on a wood base is available, along with every other combination you can talk yourself into.
