Carved faces need light with a direction. Under a ceiling fixture the features flatten out and the whole thing reads as a lump of bark. Put it near a window, or with a lamp off to one side, and the shadow does the work: the expression only shows up when something casts across it.

Good to know

Leave the plant in the nursery pot it came in and set the pot down inside. You keep control of the watering, you can swap out anything that sulks without repotting, and no water sits in the bottom of a shape you cannot see into.

Trailing plants suit this one, upright plants argue with it. A pothos or a string of hearts spills down over the bark and finishes the figure. A stiff spiky plant grows straight up out of the head and looks like something went wrong.

Outside, the thing that ages a piece like this is not rain, it is water standing in the bottom through a freeze. Tip it out and bring it under cover before the first hard night, or leave it where it is and take the weathering as part of the look.
