A spherical mug sits in your hand differently from a cylinder. You cup it rather than grip it, and the heat comes through the whole palm instead of one narrow side, which is pleasant in January and a problem in July. The handle is there for the second case.

Good to know

None of these stack, and the ring on Saturn stands proud of the body, which rules out a packed dishwasher rack and a cupboard where mugs go rim to rim. Give it a hook or a shelf edge of its own before it arrives.

A textured glaze also traps coffee oils in the grooves around the handle joint. A brush reaches in there and a rinse does not, so a mug like this shows a stained ring earlier than a smooth one would.
